I’ll try to say this without being confrontational, but if you’re looking for controversy you can find it anywhere.

Dean Winchester is a fictional character; a well-loved character on a TV show that thousands of people adore. The show has brought friends together, caused people to ponder things they might not normally think about, and resonated truth in ways that can’t be explained to those on the outside. Because of this, it means a lot to people. However: it’s a TV show. That’s all it is. It’s fiction. It doesn’t hold any keys to the meaning of life. Life itself holds those keys, not fiction.

Jensen Ackles is an actor. He portrays Dean Winchester with a commitment and talent that those of us in this fandom readily agree upon, even if the rest of the world has yet to catch up. But Jensen is just a person. He’s a human being like all the rest of us schmucks out here.

People often talk about the “responsibility” that someone has as a celebrity – to be good, to act right, to be an example – but I’ve never quite bought into that. It’s true that some people look to celebrities as their true heroes, but that, to me, is the same as trying to glean a real life out of a fictional story. It doesn’t make sense to try to force them to be “better than” us, because you know what? They’re not! Your heroes should be real life people you see every day – and if you don’t have any, make yourself into your hero.

“But,” people say, “Even if we know we shouldn’t idolize these people, there are plenty of people and children out there who will anyway.”

That’s true. But that’s the responsibility of them and the people around them. It isn’t ours, and it isn’t the celebrities’. These are actors — their job is to act, not guide us through life.

Despite how possible it might feel or how tempting it may be, you can’t make someone be responsible for anything. They either are or they aren’t. They either take it on or they don’t. No amount of berating, pleading, coercing or badgering is going to cause someone to take responsibility (whether it belongs to them or not).

These days we’re all under the impression that our thoughts and opinions matter. When you get right down to it, that’s really not the case. Just because we have friends on Facebook that follow every word we say, just because we have so many thousands of followers on Tumblr or Twitter or what have you, just because people want to see what things we like on Pinterest does not mean any of it really matters to anyone but ourselves. Just because you have access to the world doesn’t mean you’re going to change it whatsoever.

That might sound harsh, but it’s true. No matter how important you feel or how loud you think your voice is, you’re nothing in the grand scheme of things. And in case it hasn’t occurred to you – the same is true for Jensen Ackles. Our fandom does not encompass the whole world. There are millions (I’d venture to say billions) of people out there who have no clue who this man even is.

The world doesn’t care about us – not you, not me, not Jensen Ackles. It couldn’t care less.

The flipside of this is that your feelings are still your feelings, and no matter what they are, they are valid. You can like whatever you want to like, you can be happy about whatever makes you happy; you can be angry or offended or hurt by anything because you’re a completely unique person made up of thousands and thousands of thoughts caused by thousands and thousands of incidents and circumstances. Other people may not agree with you, but no one can stop you from feeling the way you do, nor should they try.

It seems like people are starting to get “validity” and “significance” confused. What’s extremely, earth-shatteringly, terrifyingly significant to you might not matter much to anyone else, and probably doesn’t matter at all to the majority of the other people on this planet. Why? Because they’ve all got their own shit to deal with, to think about, to worry about, to love, to need, to be hurt by. It’s not personal, it’s just the way of the world.

Your opinion is not more important than theirs. Your pain is not more important than theirs. Your feelings are not more important than theirs. Not to most people, and least of all to them.

Everyone has the right to feel what they feel, and everyone has the right to express it. But there’s nothing out there that says you have the “right” to be understood, or listened to, or catered to. It’s easy to feel like this is a simple A (my feelings are valid) + B (I’m allowed to express them) = C (people will care and understand) equation, but it’s not. Maybe it should be, but it’s not.

Some people think Jensen did nothing wrong this weekend, and some think he acted wildly inappropriately. Some people don’t care. Their feelings are all valid. Every one. When someone gets upset with you for being upset or not being upset with Jensen, please try to remember that, and also that nothing in the laws of humanity dictates that we have to listen to each other.

And here’s where I’ll put in my (unpopular) opinion (that you don’t have to listen to or understand): when we’re kids, we cry when we’re upset – scream and yell and whatever else when we don’t get our way. As we grow up, we learn that that’s not always the best way to get our point across. A lot of the stuff I’ve been reading the last few days falls into that “tantrum” category. That doesn’t mean it’s invalid, but it certainly doesn’t help anyone understand. And if you’re going to talk about it in public, I can only assume you want people to understand – otherwise it’s just making noise because you want attention. That’s what it looks like. That’s what makes people angry. And It also seems obvious that if you were trying to “call Jensen out” on what he did, from a place of respect and love (like many people have claimed), you would attempt to do it privately in some way – not by splashing your pain all over the internet for the world to ogle. It comes across as aggressive and childish, and neither of those things are conducive to positive recognition or sympathy, let alone the two combined.

Sorry if this pisses anyone off, but this is what it is and I’m not changing it. I get to think and feel what I think and feel just like the rest of you. And I’m just so tired.

Oh, and one more thing: it’s so easy to be hateful to people when they’re not actually there in front of you. You’ll never see them, you don’t have to face them — so who cares? We’re all guilty of it, but that doesn’t make it right. I don’t really need my points proven, but if you feel obligated, go ahead…

Now that I have kids in my life, I find myself wondering how many great things (books, movies, music) I didn’t find until years later or have missed out on completely because I didn’t take adults’ recommendations seriously.
